Trip Overview

Jiri to Barabise Trek is an amazing trek of the Great Himalayan Trek section. You will be trekking through an isolated trail; we leave the tourist trail behind. We will trek through lush forests that are habitats to lots of species; this will make the trek interesting for trekkers who love bird watching. Along the trail we come across many villages with people following Buddhist and Hindu cultures, these villages get very few tourists visiting them as the trail is a non-touristic route. At the same time, the trek offers a mesmerizing view of the Himalayas and especially of Mt Gaurishankar. However, Jiri to Barabise Trek is an amazing trek for those who wish to trek through less touristic areas.

Note: Below trekking hours, altitudes and distances are approximate, and absolutely for general ideas only.

We descend down and begin to continue trekking on the dirt road until we enter join trail entering the forest, you might witness various species of birds in the forest. Descending further we then cross Jhyaku Khola and enter the village of Sherakapti, it is a beautiful village inhabited by Jirel people. This village is suitable to stop for lunch. After having lunch we climb to the Jhyanku Dolakha monastery in the village and follow the trail behind it. We will climb for several minutes and then descend again; we descend through another forest with birds. After the forest the trail gradually climbs up again. Trekking for few more hours then we will arrive at another settlement of Basa, from where we descend down and cross the Kakchapa Khola. After crossing the river, which we will have to cross stone-hopping, we will gradually climb up for few minutes and then climb steeply through forest until we reach Putchar Kharka. We continue to trek further down until we arrive all the way down to Bare at the Tama Kosi Nadi, after the village we trek through the small trail just over a small pond. We choose this trail because it is nicer to walk and leads through the countryside rather than trekking through the dirt trail. This trail saves more time as within few hours we will reach Barle, a small town with market are and restaurants. We can stop here for lunch; we can have “daal bhaat” here in a restaurant. The trail passes stupas and enters a small settlement of Soysan, right after the village the trail goes further down to another small river. After crossing the river we gradually ascend passing a small school in a village called Charsapa, we trek through a rough landscape and along with views of snowcapped mountains. We pass the village of Chilankha and Loting, from Lhoting we descend down to the Singati Khola and as we cross the river we begin to ascend towards Bigu Gompa. Today is another long trek day; after having an early breakfast we rejoin the trail. Leaving Bingu Gompa the trail begins to descend through forest, after an hour of trekking we will reach a bridge and once we cross the bridge we trek to a dirt road from where we begin climb. The dirt trail leads straight up to the pass but there are many shortcuts away from the dirt road, we will be taking these shortcuts to the pass. Along the trail you can observe changes in landscapes as we will be trekking through bamboo forest, then more grassy and rocky landscapes, and finally through rhododendron and pine forests. As we trek higher we will be offered with view of Himalayan peaks (Gaurishankar, Mt Chekigo and Mt Bamogo). Few more hours of trekking will take us to the top of the pass, from here you will not get to see the views of the mountain but you can clearly see the valley that we are about to enter. After the pass, we descend down crossing the road several times, few more hours of trekking will take us to the village Dolangsa. In Dolangsa, if you want we can visit a monastery here, after the village we go further down through agricultural fields until we reach a stream.
