Biking to Lower Mustang is an awe-inspiring trip for those who truly want to experience an overwhelming holiday and feel the real adventure in this amazing part of the world. The Jomsom Muktinath mountain biking tour is one of the most popular adventure tours in Nepal. Jomsom is in the heart of the Himalayas and provides some outstanding trails for mountain bikers.

It would be an entire transformation for riders coming from the lush, green valleys of Nepal to the relatively beautiful high-altitude desert encircled by a magnificent backdrop of the Himalayan peaks.

If you are family, friends, or solo travelers seeking a mountain biking holiday in Nepal, then Lower Mustang would be perfect for a cycling trip. The ride along to the Lower Mustang undertakes a lot of adventure and fun that will stay in your memory forever. Riding through unspoiled hamlets inhabited by diverse groups of native people, embraced by the soaring mountain, canyons, ancient fortress, unique culture, and authentic lifestyle is an amazing lifetime experience.

The journey starts by cycling from Gurje Bhanjyang all the way to Kopan. We then drive to Boudhanath, a famous Buddhist stupa (temple), and has been marked as a world heritage site. The next day we board onto the short and spectacular mountain flight of Pokhara. Once you arrive in the vicinity of Pokhara, you are greeted with superb views of the mountains. And you will be astounded by its sheer beauty and pristine charisma. Subsequently, we take another scenic flight to Jomsom. From there, we will start off our cycling journey following Kali Gandaki River Valley, the deepest gorge in the world.

Biking to Lower Mustang in an adventure route at the base of Thorong La Himalayan region. The ride reaches an altitude of 3,710 meters. This route is one of the most famous downhill from Muktinath (3,710 m) to Beni (900m).

The cycling starts from Jomsom (2,800 m). On the same day, we ride to Kagbeni, the border of the ancient valley of Upper Mustang. The next day, we explore Gyu La Pass, our trip’s high point to witness Upper Mustang. Then we ride back to Kagbeni for overnight.

Further, we ride off uphill to reach Muktinath which is a famous Hindu and Buddhist temple. The area hosts Lord Vishnu temple and a monastery nearby. Muktinath village is the base of a famous mountain pass, Thorong La (5,416 m) in Annapurna conservation area.

From here all the downhill way reach Beni through Kali Gandaki gorge, passing villages like Marpha, and Tatopani.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu, receive and transfer to Hotel. Pre-trip briefing.

Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International airport, our representative will be awaiting you to welcome with Nepal Sanctuary Treks placard. You will be then escorted and transfer to hotel. Further details and short preliminary briefing will be provided after transferring to the hotel. Stay overnight in Hotel.

Day 2: Gurje Bhanjyang - Heavens track - Helipad - Baudha.

We start our day with an hour picturesque drive up to Gurje Bhanjyang through charming villages and rice fields. You have ample chance to explore local culture and capture the photos.

Gurje Bhanjyang is the initial point of our ride. It starts with an initial ascend and descends part then a short ascending part to the track of the heavens which takes about 30 minutes.

From here, we take a short ascend for 20-25 minutes and then ride around Kathmandu helipad trail for another 30 minutes. The ride will end at Kopan.

After the short ride from Helipad, you will get picked up by vehicle along with bikes. You will drive to Baudha, one of the largest stupas in the world as well as the sacred Buddhist sites in Kathmandu. You will observe the monk chant in the prayer hall while people lighting butter lamps and reciting mantras.

Day 3: Flight from Kathmandu– Pokhara (895m/2,938ft) 25 mins flight

You will be transferred to the airport and will take a flight to Pokhara. We can catch stunning views of the Himalayas from the right side of our airplane. Upon our arrival in Pokhara, the beautiful lake city, we are rewarded with superb views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, the five peaks of Annapurna and others.

Day 4: Flight from Pokhara to Jomsom 25 minutes (2,743 m). Ride to Kagbeni (2,800,m).

Today we will wake up early and catch the flight to Jomsom. The flight is about a 20 min flight to Jomsom, above the Pokhara valley and deep into the heart of the Himalaya, take a glance out of the window for eccentric views of Dhawalagiri and beyond. You can see the spectacular scenery onward from Jomsom. It looks like dessert though encircled by the snowcapped Himalayas on either side.

The flight is simply spectacular as the plane’s wingtips nearly touch the snow blanketed mountains, fly right between the almighty Himalayan and you feel your adventure has really initiated as the small plane banks left and landed in Jomsom. Landing on an airport in Jomsom will be the awe-inspiring moment for you. Jomsom is popular for Apple, strong winds and spectacular Himalayan landscapes

In Jomsom, we have breakfast and spend some time getting the bikes ready for the trip. Then we ride along the Upper section of the Kaligandaki River to Kagbeni.

The trail is a generally flat and steady ride of about 2 hours. Kagbeni is a charming Buddhist village, a perfect place to explore in your leisure time. Get yourself lost amongst the cobbled paths and willow vegetation along the crystal clear mountain streams.

Day 5: Ride to Gyu La Pass (4,077m), our trip’s high point. Views of Upper Mustang.

After breakfast, the bikes will be loaded up and we will drive for about an hour to Jharkot. From here it’s a climb uphill to Muktinath, Standing in a popular spiritual hub – Muktinath and admiring the views of mountains around this place is a wonderful experience. The eternal flame burning in the temple is a majestic view to see.

From Muktinath, we take a gradual singletrack climb to the highpoint of our trip, the 4577 meters high Gyu La Pass. This pass borders the restricted area of Upper Mustang, the legendary and forbidden kingdom. The pass offers panoramic views of Thorong peak, Nilgiri, Tukche peak & the beautiful Muktinath valley.

After spending some time at the pass, we descend back down to Kagbeni for overnight.

Day 6: Kagbeni - Muktinath (3,710 m) (drive). Ride to Marpha (2,650 m) via Lupra. (2,740 m)

After breakfast, we take an hour scenic drive to Muktinath. Then we start to ride with a sublime flowing single track for 5-10 minutes. Further ascent for about 400m to the Lubra pass (4,000m).

We will stop here to savor the view of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri Peak, Tilicho Peak and beautiful landscapes from the top of the pass (4000m al.) From here it’s a 1300m descent with lots of switchback steep loose gravel. After the descent we reach a river and ride along here for a section, then it is a 25-30 minute ride to reach Jomsom for lunch.

Then ride will be more picturesque on an up and down track, through apple gardens, hamlets, across suspension bridges and past a small lake.

It takes between 1-1.5hrs to reach Marpha. Marpha is the apple town of the Himalayas, famous for its apple pies, apple cider, and apple crumble and apple varieties.

Backed up against soaring cliffs, Marpha’s homes are made from stone. Doors and windows are bounded by cherry wood panels, sharp red lines bordering rustic white stone.

Day 7: Marpha - Tatopani (1,100 m)

After breakfast, we start a big descent of about 1,900m with one big climb for 300m. We ride downhill following Kali Gandaki River. Until we reach the lunch destination the ride will be up and down with mixed single tracks, double tracks, and technical and flowing terrain.

Today you will ride through the world’s deepest valley, the biggest waterfall in Nepal and the wild pots garden. Then we ride downhill to Tatopani with the occasional short climb. Tatopani which in the local language means hot water is a nice, small town located beside Kali Gandaki River. You can simply dip the body into this medicinal hot spring to rejuvenate weary muscles and heal from aches.

Day 8: Ride Tatopani - Beni and Drive to Pokhara

After breakfast, we leave Tatopani behind and ride towards Beni.  Initial ride to Beni is about 21 km on rolling jeep tracks. From Beni, we take a drive for 3 hours to reach Pokhara.

Day 9: Flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu

After breakfast, we take a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, our representative will transfer you to the hotel. You can spend the day rest or catch up on some last minute shopping or shop for some locally made handicrafts and souvenirs. Stay overnight in Hotel.
